Traditional games a hit

The Indigenous Games festival in Hawston attracted 467 athletes from the Overberg on Saturday, 21 May 2022 in close to perfect weather conditions.

Participants from towns in the Overstrand, Caledon, Grabouw, Riviersonderend, Bredasdorp and Swellendam were competing for a place to represent the Overberg in the Western Cape team.

This event is annually organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports (DCAS) and features traditional games such as morabaraba, diketo, dibeki, drie stokkies, jukskei, kgati, ncuva, intonga and kho-kho.

Overstrand players selected:

The boys and girls of Qhayiya High School, Camagu Manxiwa, Thembakazi Duba, Ayabonga Boy, Sinovuyo Mkwasi, Asiphe Mkwasi, Siphumelele Lusawana, and Nwabisa Heke are going to represent the Overberg in Dibeke, a running ball game. 

Nothando Zinganiso in Drie-stokkies. Emilhle Rasana, Axolile Mfundisi, Siphe Bham, Sinothando Shumane, Azola Kibido and Phawoluhle Mjukleni will do their best in Kgati, a rope skipping game.

Hermanus girls Ayola, Liviwe, Siphokazi, Eyam, Lusanda, Luhle, Ahlume, Othandwayo, Minentle, Sinentlahla and Marcine have been selected for the Kho-kho team and Lebohang Mtukane in the boardgame, Morabaraba.

The four Hermanus Jukskei boy players that have been selected are Renaldo Christiaans, Moegmat Hendricks, Antaria Geduld and Janigue Wilbach; and the grade 6 and 7 girls of Hawston Primary that will throw the wooden pin are Aden Faro, Hope Gibson, Chandré Sparks and Ruby Witbooi.

The Provincial Indigenous Games will take place on 16 and 17 July in Cape Town (Kuilsrivier) and the Nationals will be in Durban during Heritage week on 22-24 September 2022.

Overstrand Municipal Manager, Dean O’Neill wishes all teams the best of luck for the preparations and tournament ahead.
